Science is more fun than you think.

About Me

Hi, I’m Ms. Thompson. I’ve spent 50 years in the world of science, first as a student, then a researcher and then as a teacher. Now I am channeling all of that experience into one-on-one tutoring for high school and college students who want to actually understand Biology and Chemistry.

📍 Based in San Diego, CA

Science has been the center of my life for a very long time, and I love helping others find what makes science fun & interesting for them.

I spent 15 years as a researcher before moving into teaching for the next 20. Throughout all of it, the part I found most rewarding was the moment a student went from confused to confident. That moment never got old.

Since retiring from formal teaching, I have been doing what I enjoy most: working with students one on one. There is no rushing through a curriculum here. It is just you, me, and the material, at whatever pace actually works for you.

My students are high school and introductory college students taking Biology and Chemistry. These courses can pile up fast, and the exams do not wait for anyone. I know exactly where the hard spots are, because I have watched students navigate them for decades. I also know how to explain those hard spots in ways that stick.

What I can help you with

AP Biology

Chemistry of Life, The Cell, Genetics, Evolution, Plants, Animals, Ecology, and exam strategy for the AP test.

AP Chemistry

Reactions/Stoichiometry, Atomic structure, Bonding/Molecular structure, Gases, IMFs, Solid State, Solutions, Kinetics, Equilibria, Acids/Bases, Entropy/Free Energy, Electron Transfer Reactions, Nuclear Chemistry, and exam strategy for the AP test.

High School Bio & Chem

Keeping up with coursework, preparing for tests, and filling in the gaps before they grow.

Intro College Courses

General Biology and General Chemistry for students in their first year, including lab report support.

Test Prep & Exam Review

Targeted review sessions before a big test, covering the concepts that show up most.

Concept Clarification

When class moved too fast and something just did not land, we slow down and work through it properly.

Why students choose me

1

Real science experience, not just textbook knowledge

I spent 15 years doing actual research before I ever set foot in a classroom. That background changes how I explain things, because I can connect what you are learning to how science really works.

2

Two decades of teaching means I know where students get stuck

After 20 years in education, I have seen the same stumbling blocks come up again and again. I know what to watch for, and I know how to help you past them without making you feel behind.

3

Learning is supposed to be interesting

Science is genuinely fascinating once you get underneath the surface of it. My goal is to make that happen for you, not just help you pass a test. (Although we will absolutely help you pass the test too.)

4

No judgment, no rush

Every question is a good question here. If something is not making sense, we go back as many times as needed until it does.

Online tutoring, wherever you are

I’m based in San Diego, California, and I work with students entirely online. That means students across San Diego and beyond can book sessions without anyone having to drive anywhere. Sessions are one on one, over video, and scheduled around what works for your week.

Ms. Thompson was instrumental in my success as a pre-veterinary student across a wide range of courses, from honors biology and honors chemistry all the way through organic chemistry. She always knew how to approach a complex topic and how to guide me toward study strategies that actually worked. Her responsiveness, kindness, and mentorship throughout my entire pre-veterinary journey meant a great deal to me. I would highly recommend her.

Before working with Ms. Thompson, I dreaded chemistry. By the time we finished, I had learned to trust my own thinking in the subject. She brought extraordinary patience and a genuine commitment to my growth, designing custom exercises around my specific weaknesses and tailoring her approach to how I actually learn. With her help, I built a strong foundation that carried me as the material became more advanced, and her guidance extended well beyond the coursework itself. Any student who works with her is exceptionally fortunate.
